Use and Support of Software
Naches Valley School District Computers
Installing software on district equipment:
Each new computer purchased by the district will be equipped with a set of standardized, fully supported software. This software will be installed and configured by district technology support staff prior to the machine being used in the classroom, however, set-up and installation may take place in the classroom where the computer will be placed.
Fully supported software that is purchased after the initial computer purchase may also be installed by technology support staff, with prior District approval.
When software is purchased that does not qualify as fully supported, the staff who made the selection and who intend to use the software are responsible for making backup copies of the programs and for all installations, support, returns and exchanges.
If it is suspected that a non-standardized program may be causing problems with the operation of the computer and its standardized software, the questionable program(s) will be removed.
Any and all software that is installed on a district owned workstation must be pre-approved by the building principal prior to installation. All software placed on District owned equipment becomes the property of the district and must have appropriate license on file with the District.
In no case are staff or students allowed to install or share software on the without proof of licensing and specific permission from the District Technology Coordinator or District Superintendent.
Software Support Definitions:
Full Support:
The district will identify the specific software packages and versions that are supported and will place such programs on district owned computers where the software is needed and the computer is determined capable of running them.
Standardized software is purchased through the district technology coordinator unless other arrangements have been made, and installed and configured by the technology support staff.
Manuals on the use of the software will be placed in the libraries of each school when there is not on-line help available for a fully supported program.
Technology support staff will be available to troubleshoot problems with usage and configuration of fully supported software programs.
Training will be provided as needed to district staff to support the use of fully supported programs.
Limited Support:
Programs purchased by a teacher or building for a specific educational purpose and/or grade level are eligible for limited support with prior approval of the building administrator.
Examples of such programs may include AR, Reader Rabbit, Frog Dissection or Science Sleuths. Such programs are usually purchased using sources such as SLIG or Title VI. Most of these programs have unquestionable educational value, but there are far too many of these for the TSS to be expected to provide full support.
Such software may be installed and configured by building TSS as time allows and only when pre-approved by the building administrator and the district technology coordinator.
The purchaser may be asked to purchase additional documentation or manuals if it appears that ongoing support for these programs will be necessary.
Troubleshooting by TSS will be limited and on an as time and knowledge allows basis for software afforded limited support.
In-district training will not generally be provided on programs that are not fully supported, except by special request of the superintendent.
No Support:
Non-supported software includes all other programs.
Troubleshooting by district technology support staff of non-supported software installed on district owned computers will not be provided and should not be expected.
If non-supported software appears to be causing a conflict or other problem in the use or stability of the computer, TSS may remove it without prior notification and consent of the user.
Unapproved Software:
In no case are staff or students to be allowed to run, download or otherwise install software on District equipment if that software is not the property of the District or of the supervising teacher.
Software that is not directly related to the improvement of student
learning, classroom management, or network management may not be installed or
run on district computers.
